Raffles and the Botanical Impulse
Raffles was well-known as an accomplished natural historian. This talk discusses the landscapes of Singapore and Southeast Asia that Raffles encountered and participated in, and how the plants, his botanical initiatives and impulses shaped the political and socio-economic histories of the region to this very day.
About the speaker:
Dr Lai Chee Kien is Assistant Professor with the Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore. His publications include A Brief History of Malayan Art (1999) and Singapore: towards another Botanical Age (2008).
This talk is the second in a series of public talks for the Raffles' Letters: Intrigues behind the Founding of Singapore exhibition.
