“No such thing as art history”: Looking at stories of art & the contexts of seeing.
A single story of art does not exist, and it can be said that art is composed of multiple, sometimes competing, stories, histories and versions of what we see. Is it, therefore, a meaningful endeavour to even try and pin down one universal definition of art when it changes all the time?
This talk will address some key questions like how art is defined by particular boundaries, genres and contexts. Who decides what an artwork means – the artist, the critic, the historian or the viewer? The idea that visual environments and materials have, historically, changed behaviour and the way people act will also be addressed.
The speaker, Zarina Muhammad, is a curator, writer and educator. She is the co-founder and co-curator of Etiquette, a bi-annual multidisciplinary showcase of art, writing and film that presented its inaugural literary event, Women Out Loud at The Substation Theatre in 2011.
