The Romance Plot and Plotting Romance: Valentine’s Day Film Screenings
If you’re planning a romantic date for Valentine’s Day, or simply a fun night-out with the girlfriends, why not come to the library@esplanade? The library is celebrating Valentine’s Day with film screenings of two iconic romantic comedies: Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953).

Bridget Jones’s Diary chronicles the everyday life of Bridget (Renée Zellweger), a thirty-something yuppie who obsesses about her weight, her dead-end job, and her single status. Bridget becomes the object of desire of the suave and witty Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) and the arrogant and reticent Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Faced with these two suitors, she must learn to choose wisely in order to achieve happiness (and wealth). A contemporary reinterpretation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Bridget Jones’s Diary reaffirms the continuing centrality of the romance plot in women’s popular culture and women’s lives in the twenty-first century.

Starring the legendary Marilyn Monroe, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes tells the story of best friends Lorelei Lee (Monroe) and Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell), who travel to Paris pursued by a private detective hired by the disapproving father of Lorelei’s fiancé, who believes Lorelei wants to marry his son for his money. As an attractive blonde woman with a slew of admirers and a love for diamonds, Lorelei gets herself into a fix with the owner of a diamond mine. Upon discovering the scandal, Lorelei's fiancé cuts her credit cards, and the two friends have to work as nightclub singers while trying to clear their names. In contrast to the ‘good girls’ of popular romance fiction, the plotting heroines of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes play up familiar stereotypes of femininity to appropriate and subvert the conventional romance plot for their own purposes.

Library patrons are encouraged to come for the screenings in pairs. Seating is limited to 10 couples per screening. Food and drinks from Cafereatt (the café within the library) may be consumed at the screening venue.

Registration for this event is required. Please register in person at the Customer Service Counter of the library@esplanade with your name, IC number, contact number, the number of friends you will be bringing, and their names. Alternatively, you may register via telephone (6332 3255).
