Dismissed by critics as a poor copy of Hollywood, Indian popular cinema, renamed Bollywood, has a huge following across many languages, cultures and continents. What makes the sentimental melodramatic romance tick among a certain kind of audience? How does the Indian film industry work? What accounts for the newfound popularity of Bollywood across the world? Professor Chua Beng Huat, Department of Sociology, National University of Singapore will moderate a panel discussion featuring the Singapore based filmmaker Rajendra Gour, Indian film and television director Suhail Abbasi, and American documentary maker Irene Nexica. Organized by the Culture Studies Cluster at the Asia Research Institute National University of Singapore.
View an exhibition on the history and travels of Indian Cinema at the library@esplanade from 10th – 25th February 2009.
